RHSB speakers Jennifer Egan, Isabel Wilkerson, and Darin Strauss clean up at the National Book Critics Circle 2010 Awards
We were on the edge of our seats last night waiting to hear the results of the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Awards. Three of our own RHSB speakers were nominated in three separate categories: Jennifer Egan's A Visit From the Goon Squad for fiction, Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns for non-fiction, and Darin Strauss' Half a Life in autobiography. Imagine our excitement when we learned that we scored a perfect three for three and all of our nominated authors took home awards in their respective categories!
Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad, a novel about the interplay of time, music, and survival, has been showered with accolades by nearly every major publication across the country, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Slate, Salon, and People. With the release of A Visit from the Goon Squad in paperback later this month, Jennifer will be heading out on tour so make sure you check her out live and in person if she swings through your town.
Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns, chronicles a watershed event in American history—the decades-long migration of African-Americans from the South to the North and West, from World War I through the 1970s—through the stories of three individuals and their families. Last night at the NBCC Award ceremony, Isabel remarked on the fifteen years that it took her to write the book, joking that if ''The Warmth of Other Suns was a person, it'd be in high school and dating.''
Darin Strauss' first memoir, Half a Life, explores loss and guilt, maturity and accountability, hope and acceptance—and the result is a staggering tour-de-force. The NBCC award follows a season of accolades including selection as a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice, an Entertainment Weekly ''Must List'' Selection, a Chicago Tribune Editor's Pick, and as one of the Best Books of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle. Random House will be publishing the paperback edition of Half a Life in June 2011.
Jennifer, Isabel, and Darin are all hitting the ground running and can't wait to get on the road and discuss their works and craft. For booking information on any of these speakers, please call 212-572-2013 or email us at rhspeakers@randomhouse.com.
